The Dormouse Bridge
Yes, this is the Dormouse Bridge, but that is not its formal name. Actually, it is more of a descriptor of what it does.
Have you ever been driving, or worse, walking on the road and seeing roadkill? I suppose that if you want to get technical about it, this is a roadkill preventer. Perhaps this would be a good name for this bridge.
Unfortunately, it isn’t designed for all sizes of roadkill, as this one is specifically made for a breed of dormouse. Apparently, the dormouse is being threatened by highway expansion in South Wales, and so this bridge was erected to keep them safe from traffic.
I suppose that you could call it “hamster trails over the highway”. However, these bridges are made of a reinforced mesh material that is “easy for the mice to traverse”. I seem to have noticed that the bridge has two huge gaps in it, where the two slopes meet the flat area. Does the dormouse hop over these areas?
By the way, this bridge costs about $290,000 to build. I suppose that it is a small price to pay for the dormouse. I wonder if you could hang a sign from this bridge. Hopefully, semi trucks can drive underneath it.
