Firefox Home for iPhone & iPod touch hits App Store
The cynic might say that Mozilla heavily previewed their Firefox Home app for iOS back in May so that, should Apple reject it, they could make a huge song and dance of it. Happily that won’t be necessary, since Apple’s App Store guardians have approved the browser companion app for iPhone and iPod touch. The concept is a little confusing at first glance: Firefox Home isn’t a standalone browser, instead using Firefox Sync to bring your browsing history, bookmarks and open tabs from the desktop to your mobile device.
iPod touch FaceTime calling to be based on email addresses?
We’ve been assuming that the next iPod touch will get in on Apple’s FaceTime video-calling action, but the open question has been how calls will actually be initiated without phone numbers, and BGR’s saying it has the scoop: it’s going to be based on email addresses. Registering an email address with the touch and FaceTime will let people videocall you using that address, but apparently calling an iPhone user will still involve knowing their phone number, which is a little odd — but BGR believes the email-based system will extended to the phone eventually as well. It all sounds plausible enough, but we’ll wait and see — we’ve been burned waiting for Apple to add a camera to the touch before, after all. Read the rest of this entry »
FaceTime to use Apple ID & email for iPod touch & iPad users?
Details on how Apple will apparently handle FaceTime video calls to devices such as the iPod touch, iPad and desktop systems which lack a phone number have leaked to BGR. According to their “reliable” source, users will register their Apple ID to their device and then associate one or more email addresses to that ID; making a call will therefore be as simple as choosing the email address of your contact.
PlayOn for iPhone brings a wealth of streaming video to iOS, we go hands-on
It’s ugly. It’s buggy. It requires a Windows PC. But PlayOn for iPhone actually works, slinging Netflix, Hulu, CBS and more to your waiting Apple device over WiFi and (occasionally) 3G. Using the same PlayOn desktop client that presently redirects video-on-demand to your game console or a media streamer attached to your TV, subscribers can download an app on July 15th that transcodes content for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad as well, and is today the only way to get Netflix on your phone.
AdMob CEO says Apple isn’t enforcing mobile advertising restrictions
They prompted some some public outcry from competitors and a preliminary antitrust investigation from the US government, but it looks like Apple isn’t even enforcing those new rules on outside ad networks – at least not yet. That’s according to none other than AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui himself, who said at the MobileBeat conference this week that “they haven’t been enforcing” the new regulations yet, and that he’s “very appreciative of that.” If enforced, those regulations would prevent companies like AdMob from collecting some analytic data on ads placed in iOS applications — data that Apple itself could collect with its iAd platform. Of course, it’s not clear when or if Apple will start enforcing the rules, but Hamoui seems to be content with the current situation, and even went out of his way to praise Apple’s own advertising efforts, saying that “anybody getting advertisers interested in mobile is a good thing. It’s not at all a zero-sum game.” Read the rest of this entry »

New iPod Touch Won’t Have 5MP Camera, 3.2MP Instead
Yesterday, we brought you two different reports about the next member of the iPod Touch lineage. Rumors were heating up that the new device, which is supposed to be revealed this September, would feature a 5MP camera on the back, along with other hit features like FaceTime capability (thanks to a front-facing camera), and HD video recording. But today marks a different direction for the rumors. Backwards.

IK Multimedia ships AmpliTube iRig iPhone interface adapter
We know you’ve been waiting on pins and needles, and at long last, the gap between announcement and “now shipping” has been closed. IK Multimedia has just revealed that its AmpliTube iRig adapter is shipping, enabling iPod touch, iPad and iPhone users to jack their guitar or bass directly into their iDevice and access all sorts of effects. From there, users can pipe the audio to a pair of headphones or a guitar amp, theoretically allowing your handheld to supplant your mess of pedals. We’re also told that the iRig can be used with line level signal sources such as synthesizers, keyboards or mixing consoles, so there’s that. It’s available as we speak for $39.99 (or €29.99 overseas), and users can expect an iPad-specific version of the AmpliTube app to be released in the near future. Read the rest of this entry »
5MP iPod touch with FaceTime and HD video incoming?
Apple are preparing an iPod touch refresh with a 5-megapixel camera, front-facing webcam for WiFi FaceTime video calls, and the same accelerometer and gyroscope updates as in the iPhone 4, claims UK retailer John Lewis. The predictions – sourced, John Lewis told Electricpig, from “noises we’re hearing from suppliers” – suggest that the traditional September refresh of Apple’s touchscreen PMP will see it targeted as an all-round multimedia device for the youth market.
Mongoose Studio Uses 12 iPods to Create Something Magical [Video]
When you’ve got a bunch of displays, the first instinct is to get them all as close as possible, and display one giant image. People do it all the time with monitors for their PC or gaming rigs, and they’ve even been used to demo all sorts of things around the world. When it comes to an iPod Touch, when you’ve got a lot of them lying around, it suddenly becomes clear that a 3.5-inch display just isn’t good enough. That’s where Mongoose Studio comes in.
