PostHeaderIcon Fling adds a new dimension to gaming on the iPad

One thing that the iPad is used for by many people apart from being a relatively hassle-free device used for surfing the Internet would be casual gaming. Many hit titles on the iPhone has already been ported over to Apple’s best selling tablet series, where the mechanics of the game remain the same – you will make use of your fingers to manipulate icons or characters on the screen to complete the game’s objective.

PostHeaderIcon iPad Car Headrest Cradle

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, but what happens when the cradle doesn’t hold a baby, but an iPad instead? That’s what you get with the iPad Car Headrest Cradle, and from the name itself, you can tell that this cradle will actually nestle your iPad lovingly from the back of a car’s headrest, making it suitable for movie watching and useful for keeping those backseat drivers quiet. Boasting a mounting frame that will clamp firmly to both headrest posts, the rubber lining makes sure that it will not mar the metal’s finish – perfect for those who have just purchased a new ride. The aluminum stand with a quartet of raised corners will cradle your iPad without obstructing any of its controls, while the frame’s ball joint allows for 360º rotation for vertical or horizontal viewing. To make sure everything stays in place, locking pins will secure the joint into place at the preferred angle and aspect. At $59.95, this might just be one of the better in-car accessories that you will have ever purchased, if only to keep the little ones entertained with your iPad on a long road trip. PostHeaderIcon BlindType vows to autocorrect all wrongs with your iPhone or Android virtual keyboard (video)

Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer gets too fat to be able to dial a number? Well, he wouldn’t have had that problem had BlindType been around. This soft keyboard is described by its makers as being extremely resilient to inaccurate input and looking at the demo video after the break, you kinda have to agree — it seems to have a pretty kickass predictive algorithm. Aside from that, the keyboard also dynamically adjusts to wherever and however you choose to type, meaning its size and orientation track along to your input, which goes some way to justifying the somewhat odd name (it’s meant for blind operation, not blind people). Text can be inserted without the keyboard even being on screen, while spaces are automatically added at pauses in your typing. BlindType should be coming to Android and iOS devices some time in the near future.

PostHeaderIcon Apple to charge upgrade fee for iPads moving to iOS 4?

As if waiting around until fall to get iOS 4 weren’t enough of a downer for iPad owners, the latest rumor we’re hearing is that they’ll have to pay a fee in order to do so. That’s right, for the privilege of waiting patiently to get some semblance of multitasking on your slate device, you’ll have to pony up the cash — or so the story goes. Stuff has it on strong authority from app developers in the know that Apple will be asking for a (relatively small) tithe from those wishing to update their iPads when the leaves start turning amber. We’d advise keeping the pitchforks stowed for now — at least until there’s some solid corroboration for this — but then it’s not like Apple hasn’t done this before. Read the rest of this entry »

PostHeaderIcon iHome iA100ZE iPad alarm dock raises questions, supplies few answers

So, the iA100ZE iPad dock isn’t anywhere in the same league as the iTar. To be fair, you can’t fault iHome for trying to stir up some interest in an over-saturated market by strapping an iPad onto a fairly typical FM radio / alarm clock / dock. And if that’s your bag, it certainly seems to be more than up to the task: iHome+Sleep app integration, Bluetooth, and that patented Bongiovi punch. Only a few questions have yet to be answered: when does it ship? For how much? And, most crucially, will you be able to sleep with an iPad shining in your face all night? Get another look after the break.

PostHeaderIcon AirTurn’s BT-105 footpedal is a real page turner (video)

If you carry your sheet music in a laptop, AirTurn’s got a USB dongle for that, but if you’ve migrated your musical cues to an certain slate, never fear, Bluetooth is on the way. The AirTurn BT-105 will bring the company’s page turning technology to iPad, using a transmitter that attaches to standard professional footswitches, allowing you to turn full pages and half pages of sheet music while keeping hands firmly affixed to your instrument. Though there’s no word on price, we imagine it’ll cost close to the existing 2.4GHz version, which runs from $40 for a dongle to $100 for a package with two Boss pedals, and when it surfaces in Q4 of this year, we’re hoping it will extend bicycling input to all the other wild and crazy apps you dream up. PostHeaderIcon iPad hitting nine more countries this Friday

Apple has just let word out that it’ll be bringing its super-selling slate to nine new markets. The Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore are all getting their hands on the device this Friday, July 23. We were just remarking on how the iPad’s sales pace had slowed down recently, but this expansion in markets should move things along toward rounding the next milestone. Local pricing hasn’t yet been revealed, but it’s not like there’s long to wait now. “Many” more countries are promised before the end of the year, so don’t despair if your local Apple Store isn’t stocking the iPad just yet. PostHeaderIcon FaceTime to use e-mail to make iPod touch, iPad calls

Apple is changing the way FaceTime works to support a camera-equipped iPod touch and possibly the iPad as well, escaped details show. Rather than require a phone number as on the iPhone 4, it will use one or more e-mail accounts attached to an Apple ID, which in turn will be linked to the device. BGR understands that the approach would depend on a new push notification system in iOS 4.1 to …

PostHeaderIcon Apple iPad USB Cable the Second to Melt

It’s been eight days since we reported that a defective USB cable, which connected to the iPhone 4, got so hot that it actually caught on fire, and managed to burn the owner. While the general assumption was that these USB cables couldn’t produce enough power to do such a thing, hence the defective part, we’re now faced with a second incident. But, the truth is, we’re still chalking this up to a random fluke, rather than an impending epidemic.

PostHeaderIcon PlayOn for iPhone brings a wealth of streaming video to iOS, we go hands-on

It’s ugly. It’s buggy. It requires a Windows PC. But PlayOn for iPhone actually works, slinging Netflix, Hulu, CBS and more to your waiting Apple device over WiFi and (occasionally) 3G. Using the same PlayOn desktop client that presently redirects video-on-demand to your game console or a media streamer attached to your TV, subscribers can download an app on July 15th that transcodes content for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad as well, and is today the only way to get Netflix on your phone.

PostHeaderIcon AdMob CEO says Apple isn’t enforcing mobile advertising restrictions

They prompted some some public outcry from competitors and a preliminary antitrust investigation from the US government, but it looks like Apple isn’t even enforcing those new rules on outside ad networks – at least not yet. That’s according to none other than AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui himself, who said at the MobileBeat conference this week that “they haven’t been enforcing” the new regulations yet, and that he’s “very appreciative of that.” If enforced, those regulations would prevent companies like AdMob from collecting some analytic data on ads placed in iOS applications — data that Apple itself could collect with its iAd platform. Of course, it’s not clear when or if Apple will start enforcing the rules, but Hamoui seems to be content with the current situation, and even went out of his way to praise Apple’s own advertising efforts, saying that “anybody getting advertisers interested in mobile is a good thing. It’s not at all a zero-sum game.” Read the rest of this entry »

PostHeaderIcon Okoro’s GX series HTPCs ship with SSD, USB 3.0, Core i7 and… an iPad?

Yeah, it’s true — Okoro Media Systems is shamelessly hopping on the tablet PC bandwagon, and it’s actually bundling an iPad with each GX series HTPC in order to give customers an elegant way to control their multi-zone audio setup (or whatever else you feel like controlling). ‘Course, the GX line ain’t the cheapest on the block, with starting prices just south of five large. That said, if you’re looking for the most bodacious HTPC on the planet and you can’t find the time to build your own, you can look forward to a Core i7 processor, upwards of 6GB of RAM, an 80GB SSD boot drive (paired with a 2TB 6Gbps media HDD), Blu-ray support, USB 3.0 ports and a quad CableCARD tuner. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Tap that source link if you’re interested in customizing your own, but only if you’re kosher with never leaving your home again in order to finance it.
